You've probably seen this before. Its been "making the rounds" since at least May.

According to Snopes its legitimacy is "Undermined":

This venerable and much honored WW II vet is well known in Hawaii for his seventy-plus years of service to patriotic organizations and causes

all over the country. A humble man without a political bone in his body, he has never spoken out before about a government official, until now.

He dictated this letter  to a friend, signed it and mailed it to the president.

 

Dear President Obama,     

         

     My name is Harold Estes, approaching 95 on December 13 of this year.  People meeting me for the first time don't believe my age because I remain wrinkle free and pretty much mentally alert.

 

I enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1934 and served proudly before, during and after WW II retiring as a Master Chief Bos'n Mate.  Now I live in a "rest home" located on the western end of Pearl Harbor, allowing me to keep alive the memories of 23 years of service to my country.

 

One of the benefits of my age, perhaps the only one, is to speak my mind, blunt and direct even to the head man.

 

So here goes.

 

I am amazed, angry and determined not to see my country die before I do, but you seem hell bent not to grant me that wish.

 

I can't figure out what country you are the president of.

You fly around the world telling our friends and enemies despicable lies like:

             " We're no longer a Christian nation"

             " America is arrogant" - (Your wife even

                 announced to the world,"America is mean-

                 spirited. " Please tell her to try preaching

                 that nonsense to 23 generations of our

                 war dead buried all over the globe who

                 died for no other reason than to free a

                 whole lot of strangers from tyranny and

                 hopelessness.)

I'd say shame on the both of you, but I don't think you like America, nor do I see an ounce of gratefulness in anything you do, for the obvious gifts this country has given you.  To be without shame or gratefulness is a dangerous thing for a man sitting in the White House.

 

After 9/11 you said," America hasn't lived up to her ideals."

 

Which ones did you mean? Was it the notion of personal liberty that 11,000 farmers and shopkeepers died for to win independence from the British?  Or maybe the ideal that no man should be a slave to another man, that 500,000 men died for in the Civil War?  I hope you didn't mean the ideal 470,000 fathers, brothers, husbands, and a lot of fellas I knew personally died for in WWII, because we felt real strongly about not letting any nation push us around, because we stand for freedom.

 

I don't think you mean the ideal that says equality is better than discrimination.  You know the one that a whole lot of white people understood when they helped to get you elected.

 

Take a little advice from a very old geezer, young man.

 

Shape up and start acting like an American.  If you don't, I'll do what I can to see you get shipped out of that fancy rental on Pennsylvania Avenue.  You were elected to lead not to bow, apologize and kiss the hands of murderers and corrupt leaders who still treat their people like slaves.

 

And just who do you think you are telling the American people not to jump to conclusions and condemn that Muslim major who killed 13 of his fellow soldiers and wounded dozens more. You mean you don't want us to do what you did when that white cop used force to subdue that black college professor in Massachusetts, who was putting up a fight?  You don't mind offending the police calling them stupid but you don't want us to offend Muslim fanatics by calling them what they are, terrorists.

 

One more thing.  I realize you never served in the military and never had to defend your country with your life, but you're the Commander-in-Chief now, son.  Do your job.  When your battle-hardened field General asks you for 40,000 more troops to complete the mission, give them to him.  But if you're not in this fight to win, then get out.  The life of one American soldier is not worth the best political strategy you're thinking of.

 

You could be our greatest president because you face the greatest challenge ever presented to any president. 

You're not going to restore American greatness by bringing back our bloated economy.  That's not our greatest threat.  Losing the heart and soul of who we are as Americans is our big fight now.

And I sure as h... don't want to think my president is the enemy in this final battle.

What the Bible Actually Teaches About Hell and the Afterlife

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness;
but is long suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish,

There are a LOT of opinions on this one!

There are scriptures that appear to teach several different things and so discerning the truth can be confusing.

I will share what and why I believe as I do concerning what the Bible actually teaches about Hell and the afterlife based on my research.

As always I welcome comments, questions or opposing views.

To begin with, as the Roman Catholic Church was establishing the official doctrines of the Nicean Christian Religion they included the teaching of Hell as a place of eternal, fiery torment (which is not of itself to say the doctrine is true or false, only that it began and/or was canonized then as official Church dogma).

Much of the imagery of the Nicean Christian conception of Hell is identical with the Pagan underworld known as Hades -- even the word Hades is used 11 times in the New Testament to identify Hell, so there is no question about the origins of the doctrine.

That such a place of eternal torment exists is still a common belief among Christians worldwide today of most denominations. Muslims also accept the existence of Hell as true. Some Hindus have a similar teaching, except their version of Hell is as a place of temporary duration rather than eternal condemnation; the descriptions are very similar however although the Vedas goes into more detail. For instance the punishment for rape is that the man will be compelled beyond his control to repeatedly rape a burning metal statue of victim for a time. The European Pagan idea of Hades contained similar prescriptions.

The Nicean Christian belief is that God does not torture anyone in Hell and does not want anyone to go that dreadful place. Rather, it is taught, Hell was created for the fallen angels who rebelled -- along with Lucifer (Gen. 6:1-6). Hell was never intended to be the abode of humans according to standard Christian dogma.

Humans go to Hell, it is explained, because they fail to make the one decision necessary for them to avoid it and to achieve salvation in Heaven: that being they refuse to accept the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus as taught by Church dogma. "The unsaved dead have to go somewhere," they explain, "and since they choose to reject Jesus, Hell is the only alternative." And they typically shrug their shoulders as if to say, "Don't blame me and God." It does not seem to occur to them that were this case, God is completely capable of creating an alternative location for them.

The standard answer therefore goes something like this:

    Hell is not something God "does to sinners," it is something they do to themselves.

But, what does the Bible actually teach about Hell? Let's see:

Hades as Hell

The Greek word "Hades" is in the Christian New Testament 11 times. Ten of those times it is translated as "hell" and once as "grave" in the King James Version.

Here is what Strong's Concordance tells us about this word:

    ... name: Hades or Pluto, the god of the lower regions Orcus,
    the nether world, the realm of the dead later use of this word: the grave, death, hell

This doesn't sound very Christian to me!

Tartaroo as Hell

Another word translated as hell is Tartaroo (tar-tar-o'-o) at II Pet 2:4. Again from Strong's Concordance:

    Word Origin: Greek, Verb from Tartaros (the deepest abyss of Hell)
    the name of the subterranean region, doleful and dark, regarded
    by the ancient Greeks as the abode of the wicked dead, where they
    suffer punishment for their evil deeds; it answers to Gehenna of the
    Jews to thrust down to Tartarus, to hold captive in Tartarus."

Strong's is a standard and widely respected Christian source book for Bible and word Study and even it acknowledges the Pagan origins and applications of these words.

Gehenna as Hell

By far the most common Greek word translated as "hell" is Gehenna.

Joshua sheds light on the biblical meaning of Gehenna this way in the KJV:

Joshua 18:16 And the border came down to the end of the mountain that lieth before the valley of the son of Hinnom [i.e. Gehenna], and which is in the valley of the giants on the north, and descended to the valley of Hinnom, to the side of Jebusi on the south, and descended to Enrogel...

Gehenna is a valley that was frequently used by Pagans for their religious rites and sacrifices to Moloch, Ashtaroth and other gods and goddesses not accepted by biblical religion. Such sacrifices and rites were deemed to-ay-baw or abominations to the God of Israel.

II Chron. 28:1 Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem: but he did not that which was right in the sight of the LORD, like David his father:
2 For he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and made also molten images for Baalim.
3 Moreover he burnt incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burnt his children in the fire, after the abominations of the heathen whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel.
4 He sacrificed also and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree

This speaks of forbidden goddess worship to Ashtaroth etc.

Such forbidden acts of to-ay-baw (religious abomination) were so common that mention of them entered everyday language as figures of speech. For instance, the Master said:

Matt. 5:29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell [Gehena].

And again:

Luke 12:5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell [Gehenna]; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

Of course some will disagree that such verses do not prove that Y'shua wasn't speaking literally about Hell as conceived. It is after all very difficult to prove a negative.

Perhaps, but contrast such comments with this counsel of Master:

Luke 17:2 It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he CAST INTO the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.

Who believes Hell is watery or that the damned will have millstones tied about their necks?

No, Y'shua was a celebrated Master of Parables as we read here:

Matthew 13:34 All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them:

Why use parables, similes and metaphors? Because the Master was teaching simple people and he wanted to make his teachings clearly relevant to their daily lives so they could understand.

The city people he was addressing carried their trash to the dump, to deep gorges where the garbage was thrown off a cliff and into the fires below. The flames and the stench at such places was nearly overwhelming. His hearers knew full well that if one was cast into those flames there would be no hope of survival! They understood the serious consequences implied by his words and hence understood his warning perfectly.

It would be like saying today that for one who fails to accept these teachings it would be just as well to be thrown into the trash compactor of a big city garbage truck and crushed. We've all seen what those powerful compactors can do.

Likewise he taught that if a heavy millstone stone were tied about ones neck and one was cast into the sea, there would be no hope. Those who earned their living from the seas understood this stern warning perfectly.

Besides, the idea of eternal damnation and torture by the God of Israel was unheard of by the Jews of his day. The Jews prided themselves on not sharing such teachings with the surrounding Pagans who practiced human sacrifices, ritual torture and so on.

Master Y'shua presented HaShem as a loving and just Father Who offered mercy and compassion. An eternity of torment for even 80 years of sin is neither just nor merciful. The very idea violates everything the Master taught.

The Roman Pagan Origins of Hell

So where did this teaching come from? Like so much of Christian dogma, the belief comes straight from Roman Paganism (compare this article on Hades: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hades).

Y'shua Taught the Resurrection of the Dead

Matthew 22:23 The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him,
24 Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die...
[And his wife remarries even seven times...]
28 ...Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.
29 Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.
30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.

According to the New Testament then Master Y'shua believed in the resurrection as taught by the Pharisees sect of Judaism. That doctrine was rejected by the Sadducees doctrine of soul extinction, hence their question.

What Y'shua and the Pharisees/Rabbis Taught

The Rabbis (Pharisees) taught and teach the sure resurrection of the dead. This is also what Y'shua taught as the above verse makes clear.

Some also taught/teach reincarnation as we will touch on below.

Sheol as Hell

The other word translated as hell in the Bible is found in the Tanakh (the "Old Testament"). This word is sheol.

In the KJV, sheol is translated as grave 31 times, as hell 31 times and as pit 3 times.

While it has no biblical basis, some Jews did/do believe in a place similar to Purgatory (as conceived by some Catholics), a kind of holding area for the dead as it were, for a time that never exceeds one year. Despite this, the word Sheol literally means grave and nothing more. There is no evidence of First Century Jews (nor those before them) believing in any sort of eternal torment nor in a place synonymous with the Pagan Hades. This is a strong indication that Master Y'shua did not teach the existence of such a place either.

So when a person dies, righteous or unrighteous, they go to "hell." In other words, they go to the grave (sheol) and await the resurrection of the dead (or reincarnation).

The Sadducee sect of Judaism taught that life ended with the grave and that one only symbolically lives on through ones offspring (hence the stress laid on having successful sons and daughters).

However like the Pharisees, Master Y'shua knew and taught that the soul -- created in the image of the eternal God -- is never destroyed whatever may happen to the physical body.

Like the Pharisees, Y'shua believed in the certain resurrection of all of the dead to the future earthly Kingdom of God and in reincarnation in at least some cases as we read here:

Matthew 17:10 And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias [Elijah] must first come?
11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things.
12 But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.
13 Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.

Resurrection and rebirth were the common beliefs of most Jews of the First Century (other than the Sadducees who were considered odd for not believing this). We know from the New Testament that this was also what Y'shua believed and taught and hence is what his followers should believe and teach today in my opinion (Matthew 28:19,10).

Belief in the eventual resurrection of the dead in the Olam Haba (the World to Come) was the fundamental belief of traditional Rabbinic Judaism and New Testament Believers, including Y'shua. It was a belief that distinguished the Pharisees (the intellectual ancestors of Rabbinical Judaism) from the Sadducees (that and that the rabbis embraced the Oral Torah as being inspired by God -- a teaching the Sadducees, the Karaite Jews and the Way Movement of Master Y'shua all rejected)

The Sadducees rejected the concept of the resurrection, because it is not explicitly mentioned in the Tanakh (although it is in my opinion strongly implied in places like Ezekiel 37). The Pharisees/Rabbis found the concept implied in certain verses and taught directly and clearly in their Oral Torah.

For Rabbinical Jews belief in the resurrection of the dead is one of Rambam's 13 Principles of Faith. The second blessing of the Shemoneh Esrei prayer, which is recited three times daily by Orthodox Jews, contains several references to resurrection. (Note: Several Reform Rabbis reject this belief and have rewritten the second blessing accordingly).

The Two Resurrections of the Dead

According to the New Testament, two resurrections of the dead will occur, one at the beginning and the other at the close of the Thousand Year Messianic Age. I explain this in some detail in chapters 20 and 21 of my Commentary on the Book of Revelation.

The Second (general) Resurrection will occur at the dawning of the time referred to in Hebrew as the Olam HaBa -- the World to Come -- but that term is also used to refer to the spiritual afterlife as one awaits the resurrection according to the reforms of Master Y'shua.

When Moshiach (Messiah) initiates Olam Haba at the conclusion of the Thousand Year Messianic kingdom, the dead of all the ages will be brought back to life and given the opportunity to experience the perfected world that their righteousness -- by the Grace and Mercy of HaShem -- helped to create.

The Second Resurrection

According to some, the unrepentant dead will not be resurrected. Others teach they will be resurrected, but only in order to be "uncreated".

This is one of the areas where I agree with the reforms/corrections introduced by Master Y'shua. I believe all will be resurrected and that in due time all will come to repentance.

There are what we might think of as more-mystical schools of thought that teach that the resurrection is not a one-time event, but an ongoing process of spiritual evolution. These schools teach that the souls are repeatedly reborn or personally resurrected into new bodies in order to continue the ongoing process of tikkun olam, the mending of the world.

Rebirth

Through the process of rebirth or reincarnation all souls will eventually comes to embrace the Light of God's Love without exception. Theologically this view is sometimes known as universalism (not to be confused with the denomination that bears that name).

For "Jewish souls" tikkun olam includes being the instruments of vessels of HaShem for the blessing and liberation of the entire world. Support for this teaching may be found verses like Genesis 12:1-3, that say that through the Jews, HaShem will bless of all peoples.

Some such sources add that this is the intention of the "born again" process (John 3:3-7) Y'shua referenced. This process of reincarnation is said to be the common experience of all souls, "... because God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved." (John 3:17). Reincarnation therefore continues until the individual soul is ready to enter Olam HaBa or until Moshiach comes and ends the present age at the Battle of Armageddon. Those souls who are ready rest until the resurrection while those who are not continue to don material flesh.

This teaching is included in the theological doctrine known as universalism (again, not to be confused with the denomination of that name).

Others teachings indicate that rebirth only occurs in unusual circumstances, where the soul has left unfinished business or where God wishes to use the soul for some future specific work (proof-texts for this view include Matthew 16:14 etc where Y'shua identifies John the Baptizer with the Prophet Elijah reborn).

The belief in reincarnation is also one way to explain the traditional Jewish belief that every "Jewish soul" in history past, present and future was present at Sinai and agreed to be bound by the Mosaic/Torah Covenant. Another sometimes accepted explanation for this is that souls exist before their single physical embodiment and that as pre-born souls all Jews were present at Sinai.

Belief in reincarnation in any case is commonly held by many Chasidic sects of Judaism as well as many other mystically-inclined Jews and by far more Christians than most traditional Christians suspect.

As for those who are utterly wicked we read the following from http://www.jewfaq.org/olamhaba.htm (I have slightly edited it for clarification):

"Gan Eden and Gehinnom

The place of spiritual reward for the righteous is often referred to in Hebrew as Gan Eden (GAHN ehy-DEHN) (the Garden of Eden).

This is not the same place where Adam and Eve were; it is a place of spiritual perfection.

Specific descriptions of Gan Eden vary widely from one source to another. One source describes the peace that one feels when experiencing Shabbat properly as merely one-sixtieth of the pleasure of the afterlife. Other sources compare the bliss of the afterlife to the joy of sex or to the warmth of a sunny day.

Ultimately, though is said that the living can no more understand the nature of this plane of existence than the blind can understand color.

[This is as Apostle Paul explains:

I Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.]

According to Rabbinical Judaism only the very righteous go directly to Gan Eden. The average person descends to a place of punishment and/or purification, generally referred to as Gehinnom (guh-hee-NOHM) (in Yiddish, Gehenna), but sometimes as She'ol or by other names.

[Again, we can see how thoroughly this imagery has impacted Hebrew society. By using this term Master Y'shua was drawing upon a long and well established tradition.]

According to one mystical Jewish view, every sin we commit creates an angel of destruction [i.e. a demon], and after we die we are punished by the very demons we created. Some view Gehinnom as a place or state of severe punishment, a bit like the Christian Hell of fire and brimstone only of temporary duration. Other sources merely see it as a time-out for reflection wherein we consider the actions of our lives objectively, contemplate the harm we have done and the opportunities we missed, and experience remorse for our actions.

[This view is similar to the Hall of Akashic Records that many mystics reference.]

The period of time spent in Gehinnom never exceeds 12 months, and then the soul ascends to take his place in Olam HaBa.

Only the utterly wicked do not ascend to Olam Ha-Ba at the end of this period; their souls are punished for the entire 12 months. Sources differ on what happens at the end of those 12 months: some say that the wicked soul is utterly destroyed and ceases to exist while others say that the soul continues to exist in a state of consciousness of remorse, while yet others say the wicked are sent back to earth and reincarnated so as to understand their errors.

[It is also taught by some that once Moshiach comes and inaugurates Olam Haba on this planet that those who still are unrepentant will be transferred to other planets experiencing earlier phases of development so they can eventually accept the Light of Love and Truth. In this way it is taught that all souls will eventually be liberated.]

This 12-month limit is repeated in many places in the Talmud, and it is connected to the mourning cycles and the recitation of Kaddish" ( http://www.jewfaq.org/olamhaba.htm)

So then, Hell -- as an eternal place of torment -- does not exist in my opinion and was not taught by Y'shua the Anointed. The Master of Parables merely used the well known at the time metaphor to stress the importance of submitting oneself fully to HaShem.

Like so much of modern Christianity, the doctrine of hellfire and damnation arose from Pagan sources and lacks a biblical basis.

As this metaphorical imagery continued to be utilized by the Way Community (the early followers of Y'shua the Anointed) we find references to the Lake of Fire in the Book of Revelation and so on. All such references are merely figures of speech for utter destruction and separation from the God of Love. In the Book of Revelation and elsewhere the writers of the New Testament use several images taken from the parables of their Master as is fitting for disciples to link into the teachings of their master.

In simple terms, Hell is the absence of God's presence.

Major Nidal Malik Hasan, a U.S. Army psychiatrist, murdered twelve people and wounded twenty-one inside Fort Hood in Texas yesterday, while, according to eyewitnesses, “shouting something in Arabic while he was shooting.” Investigators are scratching their heads and expressing puzzlement about why he did it. According to NPR, “the motive behind the shootings was not immediately clear, officials said.” The Washington Post agreed: “The motive remains unclear, although some sources reported the suspect is opposed to U.S. involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq and upset about an imminent deployment.” The Huffington Post spun faster, asserting that “there is no concrete reporting as to whether Nidal Malik Hasan was in fact a Muslim or an Arab.”

Yet there was, and what’s more, Major Hasan’s motive was perfectly clear — but it was one that the forces of political correctness and the Islamic advocacy groups in the United States have been working for years to obscure. So it is that now that another major jihad terror attack has taken place on American soil, authorities and the mainstream media are at a loss to explain why it happened – and the abundant evidence that it was a jihad attack is ignored.

Nidal Malik Hasan was born in Virginia but didn’t think of himself as an American: on a form he filled out at the Muslim Community Center in Silver Spring, Maryland, he gave his nationality not as “American” but as “Palestinian.” A mosque official found that curious, saying: “I don’t know why he listed Palestinian. He was not born in Palestine.”

Center. He is a graduate of Virginia Tech and has a doctorate in psychiatry from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. While there, NPR reports, Hasan was “put on probation early in his postgraduate work” and was “disciplined for proselytizing about his Muslim faith with patients and colleagues.”

He was a staff psychiatrist at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for six years before transferring to Fort Hood earlier this year. While at Walter Reed, he was a “very devout” member of and daily visitor to the Muslim Community Center in Silver Spring. Faizul Khan, a former imam at the Center, expressed puzzlement over Hasan’s murders: “To know something like this happened, I don’t know what got into his mind. There was nothing extremist in his questions. He never showed any frustration….He never showed any remorse or wish for vengeance on anybody.”

So he identified himself as Palestinian and was a devout Muslim – so what? These things, of course, have no significance if one assumes that Islam is a Religion of Peace and that when a devout Muslim reads the Koran’s many injunctions to wage war against unbelievers, he knows that they have no force or applicability for today’s world. Unfortunately, all too many Muslims around the world demonstrate in both their words and their deeds that they take such injunctions quite seriously. And Nidal Hasan gave some indications that he may have been among them.

On May 20, 2009, a man giving his name as “NidalHasan” posted this defense of suicide bombing (all spelling and grammar as it is in the original):

    There was a grenade thrown amongs a group of American soldiers. One of the soldiers, feeling that it was to late for everyone to flee jumped on the grave with the intention of saving his comrades. Indeed he saved them. He inentionally took his life (suicide) for a noble cause i.e. saving the lives of his soldier. To say that this soldier committed suicide is inappropriate. Its more appropriate to say he is a brave hero that sacrificed his life for a more noble cause. Scholars have paralled this to suicide bombers whose intention, by sacrificing their lives, is to help save Muslims by killing enemy soldiers. If one suicide bomber can kill 100 enemy soldiers because they were caught off guard that would be considered a strategic victory. Their intention is not to die because of some despair. The same can be said for the Kamikazees in Japan. They died (via crashing their planes into ships) to kill the enemies for the homeland. You can call them crazy i you want but their act was not one of suicide that is despised by Islam. So the scholars main point is that “IT SEEMS AS THOUGH YOUR INTENTION IS THE MAIN ISSUE” and Allah (SWT) knows best.

Of course, it may not be the same Nidal Hasan. But there is more. One of his former colleagues, Col. Terry Lee, recalled Hasan saying statements to the effect of “Muslims have the right to rise up against the U.S. military”; “Muslims have a right to stand up against the aggressors”; and even speaking favorably about people who “strap bombs on themselves and go into Times Square.”

Maybe he just snapped, perhaps under the pressure of his imminent deployment to Iraq. But it’s noteworthy that if he did, he snapped in exactly the same way that several other Muslims in the U.S. military have snapped in the past. In April 2005, a Muslim serving in the U.S. Army, Hasan Akbar, was convicted of murder for killing two American soldiers and wounding fourteen in a grenade attack in Kuwait. AP reported: “Prosecutors say Akbar told investigators he launched the attack because he was concerned U.S. troops would kill fellow Muslims in Iraq. They said he coolly carried out the attack to achieve ‘maximum carnage’ on his comrades in the 101st Airborne Division.”

And Hasan’s murderous rampage resembles one that five Muslim men in New Jersey tried to carry out at Fort Dix in New Jersey in 2007, when they plotted to enter the U.S. Army base and murder as many soldiers as they could.

That was a jihad plot. One of the plotters, Serdar Tatar, told an FBI informant late in 2006: “I’m gonna do it….It doesn’t matter to me, whether I get locked up, arrested, or get taken away, it doesn’t matter. Or I die, doesn’t matter, I’m doing it in the name of Allah.” Another plotter, Mohamad Shnewer, was caught on tape saying, “They are the ones, we are going to put bullets in their heads, Allah willing.”

Nidal Hasan’s statements about Muslims rising up against the U.S. military aren’t too far from that, albeit less graphic. The effect of ignoring or downplaying the role that Islamic beliefs and assumptions may have played in his murders only ensures that – once again – nothing will be done to prevent the eventual advent of the next Nidal Hasan.

Before answering this please consider: This is not about whether one approves of homosexuality or not, the question is about legal discrimination against American citizens.

We can discuss here about whether or not the government of the US should allow discrimination against minorities of any sort to exist.

Do/Should American citizens have the protected legal right (as stated in the Declaration of Independence) to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" even when that means engaging in a lifestyle some might find offensive (like homosexuality, dancing, playing cards, listening to country music ... Christianity...)? Where do/should we as a society draw the lines?

PM Netanyahu’s great speech to the GA [Nov. 10th, 2009|10:29 am]
Personally, I prefer "the One State Solution" in  which Israel would begin a campaign of expelling everyone who refuses to pledge allegiance to the people and government of Jewish Israel  from ALL of Eretz Israel.

I fear Prime Minister Netanyahu, like his predecessors, is granting the emerging Global Union too much power over Israel. Of course, knowing the prophecies this is not surprising.

The history of the Jewish people has been marked by a paradox. We are at once both small and great. We are few in number but luminous in achievement. In the ancient world, the Jews were a small people on the foothills of Asia touching the Mediterranean. But in Alexandria some 2200 years ago, the Bible was translated into Greek, and the world has never been the same since.

“The Jews brought to civilization at least three big ideas: the idea of monotheism, the belief that all people have innate rights that transcend the power of kings, and a prophetic vision of universal peace.

“It is impossible to fully describe the revolutionary impact of these ideas throughout history, nor the poetic power of the Biblical stories that overshadowed much of the literature of the ancient world.

“As in antiquity so in modernity.

“Israel is one of the world’s smallest countries. But our success in science and technology, agriculture, medicine, and the arts belies our size. And on this continent, the Jewish community accounts for less than 2% of the population, yet its creative accomplishments in every field are legend and legendary.

“In modern times, Jews everywhere have made extraordinary contributions to humanity.

“So, smallness and greatness have thus accompanied our people throughout nearly 4,000 years of our history. But our conspicuous achievements often masked our small size and the vulnerability that comes with being small.

“Being prominent but small, we often could not defend ourselves against larger foes who envied our achievements, despised the ideas we championed, and periodically sought to expel or even annihilate us outright.

“The rebirth of Israel did not eliminate such attacks. But it fundamentally changed our ability to repel them.

“In 1948, some 600,000 Jews, their backs against the sea, fended off the assault of much larger enemies sworn to our destruction. We were aided by many of our fellow American Jews. You gave money, arms, and most important, tremendous moral support.

“You helped Israel absorb waves of immigrants, you spearheaded the historic struggle to free Soviet Jewry and you have tirelessly worked to strengthen the American-Israeli alliance which is a cornerstone of Israel’s security. Today, you support Birthright, Masa and Nefesh B’ Nefesh – these are programs that promote Aliyah and strengthen Jewish identity, thereby ensuring that our numbers are not further diminished and dwindled by the forces of assimilation.

“Strengthening Jewish identity can no longer be a task exclusively for the Diaspora.

It is increasingly the responsibility of the Jewish State. Over a decade ago, I was proud to be the first Prime Minister to allocate state funds to bolster Jewish identity outside of Israel.

“And I assure you that in my second term, I intend to do even more.

“The result of our joint efforts has been a stronger Israel. And only a strong Israel can achieve peace. But even a strong Israel is still a small Israel. And a small Israel demands a secure peace. Peace in our land, the peace of Jerusalem, our eternal capital, is one of our oldest longings, expressed in our Psalms and our prayers.

“Peace between Israel and our Arab neighbors: the first and immediate result would spare our children the horrors of war. It would spare our children the horrors of war. It would spare our grandchildren the horrors of war. What a great gift.

“Peace could usher in a new age of economic progress for the benefit of all. We have already signed peace agreements, two of them, with Egypt and Jordan. And we are eager to achieve peace with all our other neighbors, especially with the Palestinians.

“I believe there is no time to waste. We need to move towards peace with a sense of urgency and a sense of purpose. I want to be clear. My goal is not to have endless negotiations. My goal is not negotiations for negotiations sake. My goal is to reach a peace treaty, and soon.

“But to get a peace agreement, we must start negotiating. Let’s stop talking about negotiations. Let’s start moving.

“This past June at Bar-Ilan University, I put forward a vision of peace that has united the vast majority of Israelis.

A Jewish State

“In this vision of two states for two peoples, a demilitarized Palestinian state would recognize the Jewish state.

“Now, what do I mean by a Jewish state? It is a state in which all individuals and all minorities have equal individual rights. Yet our national symbols, language and culture spring from the heritage of the Jewish people. And most important, any Jew from anywhere in the world has a right to immigrate to Israel and become a citizen.

“I want to make it clear: Any Jew, of any denomination, will always have the right to come home to the Jewish state. Religious pluralism and tolerance will always guide my policy.

“What does a Jewish state mean for the Palestinians? They must abandon the fantasy of flooding Israel with refugees, give up irredentist claims to the Negev and Galilee, and declare unequivocally that the conflict is finally over.

“Yet, even after we achieve peace it may take years for the spirit of peace to permeate most levels of Palestinian society. Therefore, any peace agreement we sign today must include ironclad security measures that will protect the State of Israel.

“Here comes that paradox again.

“Israel is powerful but small. No matter where our final borders are drawn, Israel will remain exceedingly small. I am not sure you know how small Israel is. The United States and Canada are each roughly 400 times the size of Israel and the Arab world is 500 times the size of Israel. Egypt alone is roughly 40 times larger and even a small country like Jordan, our neighbor to the east, is almost four times as big. Israel is bigger than Rhode Island, but that’s about it.

“Small countries are not necessarily insecure. Belgium and Luxemburg are small but they today are not insecure. Yet if their neighbors included radical regimes bent on their conquest and destruction with terror proxies firing thousands of missiles on their people, believe me, they would feel insecure. Anyone would.

“Because of our small size and the radical and violent neighborhood in which we live, Israel faces security threats like that of no other nation.

“A few facts to drive the point home.

“A few days ago, the Israeli navy interdicted a ship carrying hundreds of tons of rockets and explosives from Iran bound for Hezbollah via Syria. Last week, Hamas tested a rocket with a range of nearly 40 miles.

“Now, for a large country, that might not be too consequential. But in tiny Israel, Hamas and Hezbollah now have the power to reach Tel Aviv.

Demiltarization

“Israel’s security therefore requires that any territory vacated in a future peace agreement must be effectively demilitarized.

“An effective demilitarizion of Palestinian areas is an essential component of peace recognized by successive American presidents. I want to assure you Israel is willing to make great concessions for peace. But there can be no concessions on Israel’s security. We have to ensure that weapons do not flow into the Palestinian areas in the West Bank, which overlooks Tel Aviv and surrounds Jerusalem.

“We cannot permit another Gaza or South Lebanon in the heart of the country. What we want is a durable peace, a peace that can be defended. We fervently hope that such a peace will hold, but we must be prepared to defend ourselves in case it doesn’t.

Goldstone Report

“The UN report on Gaza, which falsely accuses Israel of war crimes for legitimately defending itself against real war criminals, in effect seeks to deprive us of the right of self-defense. This report must be firmly rejected.

“We are proud of the Israeli Defense Forces. We are proud of our sons and daughters who are defending our country every day. We know that our army, Israel’s army, is as moral as any army on earth. In supporting the IDF and rejecting this report you’re sending a message to terrorists that they cannot get away with firing on civilians while hiding behind civilians.

“And you do something else. You support peace. For only an Israel that can defend itself is an Israel that can take further risks for peace.

“I thank President Obama for resolutely opposing this twisted UN resolution.

“I applaud the overwhelming vote last week in the American Congress condemning this biased report.

“I know there are many Canadian friends with us here today. I wish to extend my thanks to Prime Minister Harper for his staunch support for Israel’s right of self-defense.

“Last week, I watched a joint exercise of the IDF and some 1400 American soldiers to improve Israel’s defense against incoming missiles. I salute these American soldiers, and I thank their President, their Commander in Chief, President Obama for his commitment to Israel’s security. On behalf of the people of Israel, I send my condolences to the American servicemen and women who were killed at Fort Hood last week.

“My friends,

“My government is working to advance peace and we are not just talking.

“We have removed hundreds of security checkpoints and roadblocks in the West Bank. I personally extended the hours of operation on the Allenby Bridge and I’ve removed bureaucratic hurdles to Palestinian economic development.

“These efforts, along with measures taken by the Palestinian Authority to improve security, have spurred an unmatched boom in the West Bank and has made life better for ordinary Palestinians.

“For the first time in years, businesses, banks and industry are sprouting. Restaurants, theaters, and shopping malls are overflowing. Thousands and thousands of Palestinian jobs are being created.

“I think we can do a lot more to improve the reality on the ground, and we will. I intend to do a lot more.

“Prosperity can help advance peace – but only so far. To truly resolve the outstanding issues between us, we must begin and complete peace negotiations.

“We should not place preconditions for holding talks. Such obstacles to talks were never set in the 16 years of Israeli-Palestinian dialogue. From the day my government was sworn in seven months ago, I have been calling for peace negotiations to start.

“I said I would go anywhere, anytime to advance peace. And no Israeli government has been so willing to restrain settlement activity as part of an effort to re-launch peace talks. So I say today to the leader of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas: let us seize the moment to reach an historic agreement. Let us begin talks immediately.

“I know there are many skeptics. I am not one of them. I believe that peace is possible. I know how committed the Israeli people are to peace and how committed I am to make peace. But I need and we need a determined Palestinian partner as well. A partner willing to shoulder the risk and burdens as we are.

“I believe that with good will and with courageous leadership on both sides, and no less important, with the continued support of the United States, peace can become a reality. We can surprise a skeptical world.

“Achieving peace is a great challenge facing Israel. At the United Nations in September, I spoke of another great challenge: preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapons capability. The Iranian regime tyrannizes its own people, sponsors and supplies terrorism, and openly pledges to wipe Israel off the map. Imagine how much more dangerous this regime would be if it had atomic bombs.

“The responsible members of the international community must unite to prevent this grave threat to the peace of the entire world.

“I support President Obama’s continued efforts toward these ends, and I appreciate the firm position taken by the leading European countries. We must not succumb to the Iranian regime’s deceit and cunning. We must stand together to stop Tehran from realizing its nuclear ambitions.

“In addition to achieving peace and preventing a nuclear Iran, there is a third momentous challenge before us – reducing the world’s dependence on oil.

This would help cleanse our world after more than a century of industrial pollution.

“It would help our economies by decreasing our dependence on depleting resources. And it would end the massive transfer of wealth to some of the world’s most odious exporters of terrorism and fanaticism.

“Here’s the question: can we dramatically reduce our dependence on oil?

“Remember, sometimes, one or two inventions can change centuries of habit. For many centuries, salt was highly valued for preserving food. Caravans of camels carried it across the deserts, and it was nearly worth its weight in gold. The salt trade helped build economic empires, and the world’s dependence on salt showed no signs of slackening.

“But then came two inventions: canning and refrigeration. Virtually overnight, salt lost its immense value. The same thing may happen to oil. Scientific and technological breakthroughs could dramatically reduce the world’s dependence on petroleum. And Israel could play an important role in making that happen.

“You know, of course, about our high-tech companies and venture capital funds, our engineers and scientists, our patents and our Nobel laureates. In biotech and agro-tech, in solar energy and desalination, and in many other fields, Israeli innovation is transforming the way we live.

“Two perceptive writers recently wrote a book called, “The Start-Up Nation”. We are the start-up nation. Now we must use our minds to help achieve breakthroughs in the field of clean energy. For example, Israel could apply its unique expertise to the juncture of water and energy. The global need for water is rapidly increasing. Yet, a third of the cost of producing clean water is energy. Sea-water in abundance can be readily desalinated with solar power and channeled inland.

“Having mastered both of these technologies, Israel can make a decisive contribution to alleviating water shortages around the world, especially in the growing economies of Asia and the parched expanses of the Middle East.

“I am in the process of establishing a national commission that will bring together Israel’s finest scientists, businessmen and engineers. We hope to work with other governments and experts to dramatically reduce our dependence on oil in the next decade, providing an example to be emulated by the rest of the world.

“If we could cross the oceans, fly the skies, and reach the moon, we should be able to harness water, wind and sun to power our world.

“My friends,

“I know that these three enormous challenges – achieving peace, preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and developing alternative energies - seem daunting.

But I want you to remember another mission whose success seemed completely implausible when Theodore Herzl embarked on it over a century ago.

“The challenges confronting Herzl’s vision of a Jewish state were not less than overwhelming. Most of the world’s Jews lived in Europe and had no intention of moving to the barren land of their forefathers.

“Few saw the clouds gathering on the horizon. Fewer still saw the need for action. But with a clear plan and a prophetic sense of urgency, Herzl helped the Jewish people overcome their tragic condition of powerlessness.

“His implausible idea gathered so much force that within a few decades our people emerged from the worst massacre in history to establish an independent state in our ancestral homeland. And then our small people then dedicated itself to the great task of building a modern Jewish state.

“In an understandable moment of frustration, Herzl lamented, “The tragedy of the Jewish people is that we do not believe in ourselves.”

“But Herzl did not lose faith. He said, “We are strong enough to form a state”. “We possess all the human and material resources for this purpose.”

“If we will it, he famously said, it is no dream.

“My friends,

“We have learned from history that if the Jewish people are united and determined, if we harness our hopes and our dreams, the hardest tasks are within our reach.

“We are a small people but a great people; a people generous enough to pave a path toward a lasting peace; a people brave enough to thwart the dangers that confront us; and a people creative enough to once again help steer humanity towards a better future for all.”

Mathematics and the nitty  gritty of national debt etc. is not one of my gifts from God...
I can't verify this in other words.

our debt than we will have a tax base to collect on.
If we have high inflation, if our budget grows to more than it is this
coming year (healthcare bill), or the interest rate on our debt
increases (common sense), then we probably have 5… maybe 6 years at
best.

Remembering God's Sovereignty On The Sabbath

Dear Friend of Israel,

Sabbath observance is one of the pillars of a Jewish home. The weekly holiday's Biblical origins are found throughout the Torah, including in the fourth commandment. In many ways, it is one of the fundamental ways that the Bible teaches us to relate to ourselves and to God.

There are two principal motifs underlying the observance of Shabbat (the Sabbath) and both are derived from the Bible. The first is zekher leyitziat mitzraim, meaning, "remember the Exodus from Egypt"; the second is zekher lema'aseh bereshit, "remember God's creation of the world."

In Deuteronomy 5:15, the Bible states, "Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day." Recalling slavery in Egypt and the Israelites' liberation from it reminds us that we weren't simply set free from bondage to Pharaoh in order to follow our own whims and desires, but rather that we were set free in order to serve God—and that—serving God—is the Biblical definition of true freedom.

This sort of freedom was unparalleled in history at that point: It was a freedom that was truly democratic, impacting everyone, not just the privileged of one kind or another. The Bible makes it clear in Exodus 20:10, "On [this day] you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates." Every person and every beast is free—at least for one day in seven—to focus on something greater than obligations to other people.

Indeed, even when not held in bondage to other men, a man can enslave himself to things that are not truly ultimate—because freedom from slavery is not simply independence. Whatever we may remember Charlton Heston saying in the famous movie The Ten Commandments, what God in fact instructed Moses to tell Pharaoh in His name was not merely "Let my people go," but, "let my people go, so that they may worship Me." (Exodus 8:20). Freedom from slavery is true freedom only when it means serving God.

Thus, the Sabbath's connection to the Exodus reminds us of the true natures of slavery and of freedom. On another level, it charges us to remember that we who enjoy freedom are responsible for working to extend that freedom to all people still living in bondage—be it physical and/or spiritual. In this way, the Sabbath strengthens our resolve to infuse our lives with religious purpose and meaning. It also reminds us never to despair in hoping for redemption, even in the midst of slavery and suffering.

The second Sabbath motif reminds us of God's creation of the world. In the words of the Bible, "And on the seventh day God finished His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it." (Genesis 2:1-3) Just as God ceased creating on the seventh day we, too, must refrain from creating on the Sabbath day.

Some people view some of the traditional Sabbath prohibitions—such as those against lighting a fire or cooking—as antiquated, because today these activities involve so little effort that they can hardly be considered work. Actually, as noted in Exodus 35:33, what the Bible prohibits is milekhet machashevet, which means "creative work." For six days we are permitted—and even commanded—to work and subdue nature, to create. In this capacity, we serve as God's partners in the creation of the world. However, God recognized the risk that our intelligence and creative abilities might lead us to forget who is the true Creator and source of our own creative power. To avoid this, we are commanded to observe the Sabbath and acknowledge the true Creator.

Modern life raises the stakes further that we might confuse our powers of creation with the Creator's, and conclude that we do not need God. The Biblical story of the Tower of Babel illustrates this danger: The act of building a tower reaching to the sky reflected man's attempt to dethrone God, to replace Divine sovereignty with man's creative genius. Refraining from creative activities on the Sabbath is an acknowledgment that God is the ultimate source of being, creation, and human creativity. We affirm that the earth belongs to the Lord and that man is not God, though man is created in God's image and likeness and must strive to be godly.

The 20th Century Jewish thinker, Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan, summed it up this way: "The function of the Sabbath is to prohibit man from engaging in work that in any way alters the environment, so that he should not delude himself into the belief that he is complete master of his destiny." My friends, today and every day, may we always remember Who is the sovereign Master of our lives, and dedicate ourselves to serving Him, and to serving others in His name.

Nineteen States Move to Defend Individual Health Care Choice

(CNSNews.com) – Regardless of what the U.S. Congress decides about health care reform, a growing number of states are standing up for individuals’ freedom of choice when it comes to purchasing – or not purchasing – health insurance.
 
Several Kansas Republicans have introduced a state constitutional amendment that would protect the right of Kansas residents to make their own health care choices. That makes Kansas the 19th state where legislators have introduced, or will introduce, such legislation.
 
The proposed Kansas amendment preserves the right of individuals to pay directly for medical care -- something that is not allowed in single-payer countries such as Canada. It also prohibits any individual from being penalized for not purchasing government-defined insurance.
 
Under the amendment, any state attempt to require an individual to purchase health insurance--or forbid an individual from purchasing services outside of the government-established health care system--would be rendered unconstitutional.
 
The legislation is modeled after a bill written by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a membership association of state lawmakers.
 
"Federal health care reform efforts may include a requirement that individuals purchase health insurance, and a so-called 'public option' which will result in less choices for consumers and new government mandates," said Iowa State Rep. Linda Upmeyer, who chairs ALEC's Health and Human Services Task Force.
 
"Americans don't need more government mandates, we need real consumer choice. ALEC's Freedom of Choice in Health Care Act is designed to protect individual rights and our freedom to purchase health insurance of our choice, or not," she added.
 
Kansas now joins legislators in seven states (Alaska, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, New Hampshire and Utah) that have publicly announced their intention to file legislation to protect their citizens from any government health-care mandates.
 
Another 11 states have already filed or pre-filed similar legislation (Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Minnesota, North Dakota, New Mexico, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Wyoming). Arizona's measure, which passed the legislature in June, will be put before voters on the 2010 ballot.

Democrats in the U.S. Congress are now finalizing legislation that will make major changes to the nation’s health care system, and they are doing so without Republican input.
 
Republicans say they’re all for health-care reform, as long as it’s the result of true bipartisanship. Republicans say their ideas – including medical liability reform,  tax credits to help individuals buy private insurance, and allowing families and businesses buy insurance across state lines – are a better approach than adding a huge new government-sponsored insurance plan into the mix.
